My recently released book, Medical Reiki: A Groundbreaking Approach to Using Energy Medicine for Challenging Treatments, is the culmination of two decades of witnessing surgeries while providing Reiki for patients on operating tables. Even though I am not medically trained, because I have been invited into the operating rooms of world-renowned surgeons who have the healing hearts of scientists, I have witnessed first-hand the positive difference it can make when what has come to be known as Medical Reiki is offered during harrowing medical treatments. My participation in this arena has resulted in internationally respected surgeons, doctors and researchers inviting Certified Medical Reiki Masters whom I have trained in New York City to join them in an upcoming rigorous scientific investigation. They are looking to identify how Medical Reiki affects outcomes for breast cancer patients. This research is slated to begin as soon as COVID restrictions end at Montefiore Einstein Medical Center in the Bronx borough of New York City.
Anyone who practices Reiki on any level knows the power of what it can do. In terms of medicine, it’s effects can be instantaneous, because Reiki immediately activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which releases chemicals in the brain that induce “rest and restore” responses within the physical body. In a relaxed state, the body remembers how to heal itself, and that creates an environment in which the medical treatments administered by doctors have the most positive effects.
Bringing Reiki into medicine makes total sense, because it brings calmness to every situation where it is being administered. This is a positive reality for doctors to operate in, and then when their patients do well, they can rejoice! Every doctor I know has gone into their profession in order to help those who are suffering. The reality of modern medicine is such that doctors’ hands are often tied from being able to do what their instincts, intuition and divinely given gifts tell them is necessary to induce healing. In the practice of conventional medicine in today’s world, the treatments necessary to address diseases can be harrowing and shattering to a patient’s mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. World renowned breast cancer surgeon, Dr. Sheldon Marc Feldman, says in the Foreword to my book that if doctors are only able to provide what is proven scientifically, it prevents them from giving their patients things that can be of truly great value. Therefore, knowing that one’s patient is being cared for in deeper ways not allowed by conventional medicine brings comfort to a doctor.
When a Medical Reiki Master is present, the “other” part of what a doctor knows to be true is set free to assist those in their care. Since all “healing” is the activation of the inherent ability of the patient, in the best-case scenario surgeons, doctors, Certified Medical Reiki Masters and all other healthcare professionals work together to provide pathways in which the patient can heal themselves in response to all the efforts made on their behalf.
What is Medical Reiki exactly?
Medical Reiki is not a different kind of Reiki – it’s the delivery of Reiki – the spiritual reality of divinity in all of life – brought into medical settings and is often referred to as energy medicine. Reiki Masters come to learn how to safely and unobtrusively deliver Reiki in situations where their concentration is required to fit into parameters where there are actual limitations of space – like pre-op, the operating room, post op, delivery rooms for births, hospice situations where someone is leaving their life while their family and friends need special considerations, and so on. For children who are ill, parents who are suffering because of what they see their children going through – even when death takes a doctor’s patient – Medical Reiki brings great comfort.
Only about 10% of RKMRI Medical Reiki practitioners are medically trained. There are doctors and nurses from around the world who became Reiki Masters due to a personal calling and/or longing, who then decided to take the Medical Reiki Training. Whether medically trained or not, the “job” of a Medical Reiki Master is to be the delivery system of profound love, which is the underlying energy in the Universe – the creative power that made everything that exists. This work is done in a completely different realm from the one that surgeons, anesthesia providers and others working in an operating room are concentrating on. For them, safety, speed and performance excellence are of primary concern, which is exactly how it must be! The Medical Reiki Master is concentrating on being a “hollow bone” so that the energy medicine of love from the Universe that heals, harmonizes and balances the body, mind, emotions and spirit of the patient can pour through them without interruption. As you can imagine, this is quite a different reality from the one everyone else in an operating room is working under. The Medical Reiki Master is the only one in the operating room who is there for the patient’s life itself, meaning who they are, who they love, who their family is, and so on. It’ a very big honor to hold onto someone’s life and dreams while they are under anesthesia.
It’s truly wonderful to read the testimonials in Medical Reiki from doctors’ patients from around the world who have had a Certified Medical Reiki Master (CMRM) to assist them during their surgeries, and in other ways. It’s just as illuminating to read the experiences of CMRMs who have been there to see a doctor’s patient safely through their medical treatments with results beyond what was expected in the severe situations that could have caused trauma, but instead induced quick and pain-free healing.
