I get it. It’s been a long day, morning—or year! Just when you’re ready to slack off, something comes up.
What healthy food can instantly energize you? (Sorry Snickers bar, you don’t count.)
There is a trick to selecting the dietary boost that’s perfect for you. It lies in your chakra system.
Chakras are subtle energy centers along the spine (think yoga) that manage every part of our lives. However, we each have one major chakra through which our true personality expresses. Every chakra is best supported with specific types of food, and that includes those quick pick-me-ups that guarantee uplifting zest. This means that by figuring out your main chakra, you can bolster your inner self and meet life’s challenges–immediately.
To help, I’ve created a simple quiz that outlines the traits of each of the seven, in-body chakras. Select the list of traits that best describe you. Next, match your chakra number in the Answer Key and get ready to reach for an instant energizer.
(Quiz)
Select one of the following seven lists that best describes your personality:
a) Fun-loving. Emotional. Innovative. Your food choices are steered by your feelings (so hopefully, you’re making selections when happy).
b) Loving. Romantic. Big-hearted. You’ll eat the foods you love—and love to eat!
c) Perceptive. Aesthetic. Pictorial. Heck, if a food isn’t attractive, you won’t go for it.
d) Structured. Factual. Organized. You’ll eat healthy—if it’s on your checklist.
e) Devout. Meditative. Harmonious. If you could see “God” eating a certain food, you’ll do the same.
f) Active. Robust. Passionate. It’s hard to slow down enough to eat, much less pick up a pick-me up!
g) Thoughtful. Verbal. Philosophical. Doesn’t everyone select their foods according to their favorite jingle or musical lyric?
(Answer Key)
See the answer key below to determine your major chakra and the label best describing the related personality. Then use the tips provided to raid your fridge in the right way, put together a go-bag, or drop into a gas station to immediately fuel up.
a) The Second Chakra: Creative. Housed in your orange-colored chakra in the abdomen, you’re the always-feeler. Skip the muffin or Cinnabon and grab an apple, pear, or carrot stick. Spread with nut butter and maybe put a few raisins on there as well, to make a happy face. Clever little cookies or bars featuring organic cacao, coconut, and nuts are terrific too, as is a lovely fruit bowl with probiotic yogurt. Okay, if you must do a muffin, get a thick one filled with nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
b) The Fourth Chakra: Relator. You’re totally and awesomely about love, anchored as you are in your green-hued, heart-based chakra. Unfortunately, your faves are often foods that symbolize the same, like wine and chocolate. Darn. Go healthy Mediterranean instead. Sprinkle olive oil over raw or steamed veggies or finish up yesterday’s pasta, legumes, or beans with tomato sauce. “In” Relators are totally cool with eating a half an avocado. Super on the go? There are “gorp” snack packs everywhere!
c) The Sixth Chakra: Visualizer. This brow-based purple center is also called the Third Eye, and totally describes your insistence that a good food must look good. So, take the time to dress up your snacks with a logically chosen special something, like a sprinkle of shaved coconut, green parsley, slivered nuts, lemon peel, or organic chocolate shavings. Always pair a carb with a protein to stabilize your blood sugar. Try whole grain crackers with cubes of meat or cheese, or a nut butter with a veggie or fruit. Want to feel “deserty?” Dark chocolate suits your type. Just limit yourself.
d) The Third Chakra: Thinker. You might be mellow yellow in your solar plexus chakra, but when the stress hits. Wham! There goes your blood sugar. Think eating a mini-meal snack that mixes a healthy protein, fat, and carb. Best to have on hand baggies of veggies, yogurt-dip or hummus, and cheese or nuts. You can always spread almond butter on celery or cucumber or mix and match an apple with a protein bar. Since you love sugared sodas, maybe accompany your snacks with carbonated water with a splash of fruit juice.
e) The Seventh Chakra: Spiritualist. Bright white radiates from this top-of-the-head chakra, and you like foods as pure as your spirit, which will also boost this chakra’s gland, the pineal. Which ones do that? Olives, tomatoes, walnuts, and brown rice—maybe mix them together and place on arugula. Faster yet, sunflower seeds and dried apples or figs, or make some popcorn. Yes! Make the healthy-fat type and sprinkle with your favorite spices or parmesan cheese.
f) The First Chakra: Manifestor. You’re totally “rad”—and red, as per your hip-based chakra, which is flaming scarlet. Listen. I know you don’t like to slow down, much less prep a snack. So, go for ready-made. Best? Whole-grain crackers and cheese, low-sugar yogurt with fruit, or a bag of seeds and nuts. I won’t tell if you simply dash into the store and buy a pint of blueberries and gulp them down (having washed them first), but even better, get your berries mixed in a smoothie for a little more action power.
g) The Fifth Chakra: Communicator. You are the throat-based, blue-hued chakra person, and all about oral fixations. Think, open mouth, and stick in a snack. (You are a Communicator, after all.) So, how do you make healthy choices? Best are mineral-rich foods, including nuts and seeds. Seaweed can be your best friend, but so can be “normal” veggies in hummus or a yogurt dip. Totally for you, fruit and veggie smoothies with protein powder, and if you’re really down, grab a banana! Peel and eat and you’re on the way.
