Steve Harvey, one of my favorite comedians, tells a brilliant story about the flea in the jar. Despite being such a tiny creature, a flea can actually jump as high as six feet!
Yet if you put a flea in a jar with a lid on it, that flea will spend its life believing it’s only capable of jumping a few inches.
But the minute you take the lid off the jar, the flea jumps out and realizes, “Oh my gosh! This whole time I could have jumped six feet, but I didn’t know, because there’s always been this lid on my jar!”
Steve also shared that as a boy, one of his teachers insisted he was no good at certain activities, but Steve’s father came to him and said, “Son, don’t let that teacher put a lid on your jar. Who is she? What has she done? Who has she become? Don’t let her lid be the lid on your jar.”
I LOVE this story, because it illustrates one of the main reasons most people, including you, don’t have what you want (YET): There’s a lid on your jar. Maybe several lids!
If you’re sitting around wishing for a million dollars, but there’s a lid on your jar telling you it’s hard–or impossible–to have it, the likelihood of you acquiring a million dollars drops to almost zero.
It’s the same for all your other goals, whether we’re talking about your dream relationship, your dream house, your dream business, or whatever goals you have.
The great thing about lids is that you only have them because YOU accepted them, which means YOU have the power to take them off!
No matter how accomplished, experienced, or knowledgeable someone else is, their lids do not belong on YOUR jar. Take off the lids and be free!
Now that you understand why reaching your goals is next to impossible with lids on your jar, let’s talk about one of the keys to making what you want actually happen!
Get in alignment to get your results
According to both Universal Law and the strategic approach to results, four things MUST be in alignment in order for you to create. When any one of these areas is out of alignment with your goal or your intention, you will either never get there, or it will take a lot longer to get where you want to be.
Here are these four key areas, in order:
- Number one: Your beliefs.
- Number two: Your thoughts.
- Number three: Your words.
- Number four: Your actions.
Let’s go back to our example of wanting a million dollars. You want it, but you don’t have it yet. Why?
Because you’re not believing, thinking, speaking and acting in a way that’s completely congruent with the reality of having a million dollars. If you were, you’d already have it.
All four of these keys are necessary to make your goals your reality. You cannot simply think or believe something into existence. If people who created the automobile, smart phones, airplanes, and so many other amazing creations we get to enjoy now had just “thought” about it and nothing else, none of these creations would exist!
As you read this, think of something you want to achieve, and ask yourself:
“Are my beliefs that I can have it aligned with my thoughts that I can have it? Are my thoughts aligned with my words? Am I speaking what I want, instead of the opposite? Are my actions congruent with being the person who can achieve what I want to achieve?”
Likely, the answer to at least one of those questions is no. If that’s the case for you, it means you’ve pinpointed exactly what you get to work on! Congratulations!
Get to work creating alignment between your beliefs, thoughts, words, and actions, and watch as you start moving closer and closer to your goals.
Remember what I said about lids on your jar, too! Lids on your jar disrupt your belief, which throws all four key areas out of whack.
You are capable of so much more than you think you are. Take off the lids, so you can believe it, so you can think it, so you can speak it, so you can do it!
