Where are you settling for less than you want in life? Relationships? Career? Finances? How often have you done or not done something because outside opinions made you feel like you had to conform, even if those opinions did not match your true desires?
Society has some very strict standards when it comes to behavior, wants, even dress and we conform because we desperately want to fit in and be accepted.
I’ll never forget the trip my elementary school age daughter and I took to the store to purchase a birthday present for her friend. We searched the toy section of the store for just the right gift and we were having trouble finding something my daughter wanted to give her friend.
In one aisle, we came upon a large carton of toys that hadn’t been put on the shelf yet. The carton was open, so we dared peek inside hoping to find the perfect gift. The carton was filled with Cabbage Patch Kids Dolls. We took one look, both exclaimed how ugly they were, and kept searching.
Within a few weeks, Cabbage Patch Dolls were the rage and stores couldn’t keep them on the shelves. Every girl wanted one, including my daughter. Parents lined up trying to procure one for their child. In no time, as an elementary school girl, you were not cool unless you had a Cabbage Patch Kid Doll. Suddenly, they were the cutest dolls ever!
The power of being accepted and fitting in is strong. The powerful pressure and conditioning around what’s necessary to fit in starts at a young age. We change our desires and make compromises in what we truly want because the need to be accepted and loved is so deep. But when you give up your desires you give up a piece of yourself. If you do it often enough you can lose yourself completely.
In the movie Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts, Julia’s character likes whatever style eggs her current boyfriend eats. She forgets the style of eggs she likes best. When confronted by Richard Gere’s character about it, she must take time out to try all the ways to cook eggs to get reacquainted with the style of egg that is her favorite.
Where have you changed your wants and desires just to fit in and be accepted? We all do it. What has it cost you in terms of being who you truly are and following your true life path to your dreams? Do you have regrets? Do you still know who you truly are? Wearing a mask, hiding your true self, and continuously working hard to fit in can be exhausting. It can make you feel broken, sad, unmotivated and unhappy no matter how good your life is.
The good news is that it is never too late to change. You can undo much of that conditioning and begin to peel back the layers to uncover the real you. The first step is to gain an awareness around who you truly are. Only then can you get access to the memories of what your heart wanted. Getting this clarity gives you a chance to try all your memories on for size again, just like Julia Roberts. Revisiting a dream or desire gives you the opportunity to feel into it and see if it still something that makes you feel excited. If it is not, cast it aside. If it is, get curious and try it out. Experiment, experience, and be willing to explore all possibilities. Step on the path of re-discovering who you are and what type of eggs you like best.
The best place to start is by gaining some insight and some clarity around your Human Design. You can learn a lot about your true self by understanding your Human Design Chart. Human Design shows you how you are wired to operate in the world. It tells you what energy type you are and how to best manage your energy. It tells you how to make choices that will help you align with who you are rather than who someone else thinks you should be. It will give you insight into some of the special characteristics you have and how to use those specific energies to live your best life.
As you peel back the layers of doing and being who you have been taught to be so you can get better acquainted with who you truly are, your confidence, energy, happiness, satisfaction and joy will grow. You will learn that you are not broken but divinely designed to be who you are. You will be able to make better choices, stop settling, and start living on your true life path, a path that leads to your brand of success, satisfaction, and joy.
