For me, the change of season represents a doorway to possibility.
It is a time when I reflect on all I’ve accomplished and dream about what lies ahead. The movement of the seasons, the passing of the equinoxes and the solstices, are times when we stand in what is called liminal space.
The word liminal comes from the latin word “limen” which means “threshold”. So, liminal space is the time between what is now and what is next. I like to think of it as stepping through a doorway, because a doorway is the most familiar form of “threshold” most of us can relate to.
If you are looking for a special meditation to help you embrace new possibilities, this is one of my favorites, I call it “The Doorway of Possibility”.
Step 1: Prepare for the Meditation
Find a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted, and relax in whatever manner most suits you. You may choose to sit in a chair or lie down. Your posture doesn’t matter. The important thing is that you are comfortable. You may even wish to record this meditation and listen to it on one of your devices.
Step 2: Standing in The Hall
Close your eyes and imagine you are standing in a hallway. Take time to look around. As you explore the hallway, you realize that you are standing between two doors. Conjure up what you would like the doors to look like. Perhaps they are glass doors, a set of gates, fancy, or not. It’s your choice.
In your mind’s eye, study the door to your right and then the door to your left. Make a mental note of any special features. This is the doorway of possibility, the liminal space between what has been and what will be. Take your time here to examine all that it represents.
Step 3: Reviewing the Past
Turn and look at the door to your right. This is the door to the past. When you are ready, open the door to your right and inside put all of the things, relationships, places, situations, feelings and experiences that you are leaving behind. Everything that is not staying with you goes in that room. Whatever it is, whoever it is.. is NOT coming into your future!
Once it’s all in there, before you close the door, give thanks because everything, every one, every experience, every feeling of the past has taught you something, and you could not have arrived at this “in between” space without it!
It could be as simple as saying, “Thank you, but I’m done.” After you give thanks, close the door. Turn your back on it and all the things, relationships, feelings and situations it contains, because they are not coming with you into the future! Take your time. This can be scary or make you nervous, but you can do it!
Step 4: Opening the Door of Possibility
Now, turn to your left. The door on the left is The Door of Possibility; The Door of Potential. Beyond this door are all of the “Yes!” moments that have yet to arrive! This is everything you wish to become, to receive, and all that you hope to bring into being. Think of those things. Imagine all of those “Yes!” moments. They are just on the other side of this door.
Take a few moments to deeply connect with the energy of THIS moment for standing at the threshold of new life can be very moving and very powerful. It’s a wonderful place to be, isn’t it?
When you are ready, maybe on your next breath, open The Door of Possibility. Don’t try to visualize all of the goodness to come. Many times the best gifts are unplanned and unexpected. Why rob yourself of being surprised? Just remain in the hallway and feel into that space and dream.
Know that all of these ideas, hopes, plans and dreams will come to you in divine time and by divine design.
May all that is contained therein, all the potential, all the possibilities, be in service of your highest good, the good of our planet and all of her inhabitants.
When you are ready, close the door again, knowing you can return here to this threshold at any time to experience the excitement and wonder of The Doorway of Possibility.
On your next breath, bring your awareness back to the room and feel your body connected to the present moment. You should feel energized with the power of possibility.
This supportive and simple four step meditation can be used for any change and in any season of your life. Whenever you find yourself on the verge of something new you are standing at a threshold in the liminal space of endless possibility.
