Choosing Your First Tarot Deck: A Beginner’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Match

Choosing Your First Tarot Deck: A Beginner’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Match by Lisa Kessler | #AspireMag

Choosing your first tarot deck is an exciting and deeply personal journey. Your deck becomes a trusted companion for guidance, self-reflection, and spiritual growth. It’s an amazing tool to strengthen your intuition and trust that inner knowing. But with thousands of decks available — from classic to contemporary designs —how do you know which one is the right fit for you?

I’ve got a few tips that can help you choose your first tarot deck with confidence and intention.

  1. Understand the different types of tarot decks.

Most tarot decks are inspired by one of three main systems:

  • Rider-Waite: This is the most popular and widely recognized system. The imagery is familiar, making it ideal for beginners since most tarot books and resources reference it.
  • Thoth Tarot: Created by Aleister Crowley, the Thoth deck features symbolic, abstract art and a more esoteric approach. It’s better suited for those with some prior experience.
  • Marseille Tarot: This is one of the oldest styles of tarot, but the Minor Arcana is illustrated with pip cards (like traditional playing cards) rather than detailed scenes, which can make it much harder for beginners to interpret the meanings.

If you’re just starting out, the Rider-Waite system is often recommended because of its accessibility, rich symbolism, and the abundance of learning materials available.

  1. Look for imagery that resonates with you.

Tarot is a visual and intuitive practice, so it’s really important that you feel a connection with the images on your deck. Some people are drawn to bold, modern art styles, while others prefer a more classical, mystical, or whimsical aesthetic. The key is to choose a deck that speaks to your soul. When you turn over a card, you want it to inspire you.

Here’s how to assess a deck’s imagery:

  • Browse images online: Websites like Pinterest often show card images, and you can visit tarot deck creators’ websites to look at a preview of the cards.
  • Visit a metaphysical shop: Holding the deck in your hands allows you to feel its energy. Many shops have sample decks you can flip through too.
  • Look at the symbolism: Do the images feel intuitive to you? Do they spark ideas, memories, or emotions?

You’ll know you’ve found the right deck when the images “click” for you.

  1. Pay attention to the deck’s energy and theme.

Every tarot deck has a unique energy. Some are calming and nurturing, while others are bold and confrontational. Certain decks are specifically designed for love, shadow work, or manifesting abundance. There are also decks centered on a theme like pirates or ghosts or even classic movies and television shows.

Ask yourself:

  • What kind of readings will I do? (Self-reflection, love, career guidance, etc.)
  • Do I want a gentle deck or one that “tells it like it is”?
  • Do I feel a positive, uplifting energy from the deck?

If you’re drawn to themes like animals, mythology, or specific cultural aesthetics (like Egyptian, Celtic, or witchy vibes), look for decks that reflect those elements. There’s no wrong choice, as long as it resonates with you.

  1. Consider the size and feel of the cards.

Tarot decks come in a variety of sizes, from pocket-sized minis to large, statement-making decks. The size can impact your shuffling experience and reading flow.

  • Standard size: These are the most common and work well for beginners.
  • Mini decks: Portable and easy to carry but may be difficult to shuffle if you have larger hands.
  • Oversized decks: These offer more visual impact but can be harder to shuffle and fan out.

Beyond size, consider the card stock. Do you like thicker, more durable cards or flexible, lightweight ones? This might seem like a small detail, but if shuffling feels awkward or the cards are too slippery or stiff, it can disrupt your focus.

  1. Don’t be afraid to use your intuition.

Your intuition is your best guide when choosing a tarot deck. If you feel drawn to a particular deck for no “logical” reason, trust that feeling. Your higher self, spirit guides, or subconscious mind might already recognize the connection.

If you find yourself going back to the same deck repeatedly, that’s your sign. Tarot is all about tapping into unseen energies, and your intuition is the best compass.

Just in case you’re still unsure where to start, here are a few decks I highly recommend for beginners:

  • Practical Tarot (by Lisa Kessler): Diverse and inclusive with rich symbolism and colors to help a new reader get messages without memorizing a book.
  • The Light Seer’s Tarot (by Chris-Anne): Vibrant, modern, and filled with positive, relatable imagery and heartfelt messages.
  • Everyday Witch Tarot (by Deborah Blake): Playful, witchy, and easy to interpret even for a brand new tarot enthusiast.
  • Modern Witch Tarot (by Lisa Sterle): A feminist, modern twist on the Rider-Waite deck with more modern relatable imagery.

These decks are known for being accessible, visually striking, and beginner-friendly.

Choosing your first tarot deck is a deeply intuitive and magical experience. You’re not just buying a deck of cards—you’re selecting a spiritual tool that will help you connect with your inner wisdom. Follow your intuition, choose art that speaks to you, and trust that the deck you’re drawn to is the right one for you.

Remember, tarot is a journey, and your deck is just the beginning. No matter which one you choose, it will be a guide and a teacher. So, take a deep breath, follow your intuition, and let your deck find you.
