Be a Tree: Wisdom from a Female Shaman

Be a Tree: Wisdom from a Female Shaman by Granddaughter Crow | #AspireMag

We often go into the Natural World for relaxation, connection, and peace. We may plan a weekend trip to a lake or into the mountains, maybe plan to have a picnic, or simply have a nice cup of coffee or tea in our backyard. The beauty of this is that we are relaxing, connecting, and finding peace.

This is my perspective as to why we do this. I am a female medicine woman from the Navajo Nation. We are drawn to the natural world organically as it supports our health and wellbeing. Why? It is the wisdom of the natural world that we all experience, and we draw on it throughout the ages even if our minds don’t understand this – our body does. We draw on it within different seasons or situations within our life. What are these different seasons or situations within our life? Well, if you think about it, at times we might feel as though we are in a warm season, projects are going well and developing. And at times we are in a cold season, these are the times that we experience setbacks and a sense that nothing is moving forward. The natural world understands each of these seasons; hence, be a tree.

A seed is planted. It is only natural for it to be a part of the natural world – the natural order of things. This is the basic organic order of life and how we can develop within good times and bad times. The tree understands this order and can teach us this wisdom of how to simply be in every season of our life.

In The Spring, the time where the natural world begins to warm up. This creates a wonderful environment for this seed to begin to awaken. The seed feels warmth and is inspired to reach out, stretch out, and burgeon. So, it is with us, in the springtime of our life – we too are inspired to flourish. Be a Tree.

In The Summer, the time of heightened sunlight. This creates the perfect atmosphere for this seed to begin to grow – grow and develop to its fullest extent. It experiences a thriving time of self-recognition, excitement, and a time to start bearing fruit. So, it is with us, in the summertime of our life – we too are developing to the fullest extent. Be a Tree.

In The Autumn, the time of cooling down with shorter days. This creates a natural environment for the tree to relax and release – release the fruits of its labor. To share with the birds of the air, the squirls of the earth, a part of itself. Why? To become a part of something greater than itself. So, it is with us, in the fall of our life – we too harvest, and have the desire to become a part of something greater than ourselves. Be a Tree.

In The Winter, a time of the greatest coldness and not much sunlight. This establishes a time of death, loss, the time of isolation for the tree – the sap and lifeforce of the tree must move within and sustain itself and its roots. This is a natural cycle for the tree, it knows how to navigate the winter, too. So, it is with us, there are times of great coldness, loss, and death. A time that we organically withdrawal. The tree knows this – Be a Tree.

How harsh it can all be. But here is what the tree knows. There is a time to awaken, there is a time to grow, there is a time to release, there is a time to go within. This is the wisdom of the tree. This is natural, and so this process is the wisdom that the tree teaches us and reminds us of throughout all seasons and situations within our life.

We often go into the Natural World for relaxation, connection, and peace. Maybe, we simply need to Be a Tree!

I write this for the reader that is discombobulated, a reader who wants to “Aspire”. We are in times of a different climate, a different season, a time that we might deem unrecognizable. Yet, as an Indigenous writer, we have been here before. No matter what ancestral history you are born into. No matter where you land on the face of Mother Earth. We are citizens of the world. How do we know how to handle this life? Be a Tree!

For those readers who want to be a part of something greater… be yourself, aspire, do what you do every day. AND… if you don’t know what else to do… light a tea light candle at the end of every day.  have since 2023. I invite you to light a candle with me, and know that I am lighting one with you, too. Let’s be a forest!
