Life Purpose is a question we all ponder at different points in our lives. Sometimes we question our life purpose because we are triggered by a milestone such as graduation or mid-life, by a work event like a layoff or being passed over for an opportunity, a business event such as losing a big deal or having a disappointing response to an offer, even by another person’s success that leaves us looking at our own direction and our accomplishments.
Many of us struggle with our life purpose and wonder what we are supposed to be doing differently to achieve it. We ask ourselves how other people seem to know their purpose and have a clear direction for a meaningful life and an abundant business. We feel unsure or stuck trying to figure out our purpose and direction.
Life Purpose Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
We tend to overcomplicate the concept of life purpose. Life Purpose isn’t as much about doing as it is about being. Who did you come into the world to be? How you choose to express that is the doing. And we should always check in with ourselves to be sure what we are “doing” is in alignment with our authentic self as a human “being.”
Direction is an entirely different conversation. You can be the full and wonderful creative expression of your “being” and your life purpose and still go in any number of directions for the doing.
Life Purpose, Business Genius and Human Design
When we look at life purpose through the lens of Human Design, we find that our life purpose and our spiritual purpose are governed by our Human Design Energy Type and the energy we carry in the sun and earth positions in our chart. This is also the energy that makes up our business genius.
There are 5 Human Design energy types: Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, and Reflector. Your Energy Type Can Reveal Your Life Purpose
The purpose a Manifestor serves is to get things started and to initiate and inspire others into action. Spiritually they are here to translate divine inspiration into action.
The purpose of a Generator is to master the work they love. They are the workers of the world. Their spiritual purpose is to build the inspirations into form. This includes the Manifesting Generators although they are here to speed things up as well.
The Projectors are here to guide, direct and manage others. Their purpose is to be the anchor for what we are here to create. They can see the potential and blocks we have and can help guide the Manifestors and Generators as we create and build.
The Reflectors are here to be a mirror that reflects to us how we are doing. Their purpose is to be an evolutionary barometer.
The Confusion Around Life Purpose and Business Genius
Energy Type is really the essence of purpose. It is simple and useful, but it doesn’t answer the question most of us are asking, which is ‘what is my life purpose and how does it translate to my business?’
But if we remember that purpose is about being more than doing, it serves us to reframe the question to get the answer we seek. Therein lies the struggle to find the answer. We are asking the wrong question!
Asking The Right Question
What we are really asking is not ‘what is our life purpose’ but who did we come here to be and how can we express that in the one activity that we spend the most time pursuing besides sleep – work!
Your Human Design reveals your Divine Life Story™, who you came here to be, the natural gifts and talents you have to support you in being your authentic self, and the challenges you are likely to face as you become that human being.
There is awareness, clarity, and insight in this information and the keys to the question we pose around life purpose. As we become more aware of our authentic selves, we begin to see that we have been taught to be someone that conforms to societal norms and ideas around what we can or should do that have caused us to forget or hide who we really are.
This is why we struggle so much with “life purpose,” because the path we are on is someone else’s idea of how life should be, how business should be done, and it is often not in alignment with who we came here to be.
Learning who you truly are, what natural gifts and talents you have, and living in alignment with that can erase all the confusion around what we call life purpose. Understanding who you are and living in the expression of that “being,” you will find that your purpose is often revealed easily.
Find Your Life Purpose
After awakening to your energy type, 70% of who you came here to be is found in the energy that lives in the conscious sun and earth in your Human Design Chart. That is found in the upper right of the chart where the planet symbols are listed. The Sun symbol is a circle with a dot in it. The Earth Symbol is just beneath it. The circle with the cross in it. There are 2 Suns and 2 Earths in your chart. On the right the energy is said to be conscious, meaning you are aware of it. On the left it is said to be unconscious. It is in play in your life in the background.
The number in those symbols (1-64) is what makes up your core essence, your being, your life purpose, and your business genius. It is who you came here to be.

How this Translates to Your Business Genius
There is a decimal point after the gate number followed by a number 1-6. This single digit is the profile line for that gate’s energy. It is how you are wired to put your spin on the gate’s energy. It is your approach, how you deliver your core essence or express your sun gate. The gate and the line are where we find your business genius.
The meaning of the profile lines is:
- Line 1 is The Creator. You are here to create something new and original.
- Line 2 is The Dancer. You are here to discover the gifts that come to you naturally, without thinking, and learning to use them. The Dancer is all about dancing with life and living in authentic self-expression.
- Line 3 is The Changer. You will have many experiences. Life is an experiment. The Changer is here to try things, explore and experiment. You become wise about what you explore.
- Line 4 is The Server. You can focus and influence others. You give your gifts for the sake of others. You are all about relationships and express yourself through your dealings with others.
- Line 5 is The Fixer. You are practical and create greater efficiency in the world. Your natural sense tells you when to move away from an idea if it has little chance to work. You tend to be outspoken. You can be a visionary leader.
- Line 6 is The Teacher. You see further than others. You see people’s gifts and provide an environment so their gifts can emerge on their own. You share wisdom. You have insight.
