Barefoot Beauty

Barefoot Beauty by Cindy Hively | #AspireMag

Why do I love being outdoors and with nature so much? Why do I love to kick off my flip-flops and walk barefoot, earthing? Why are my yoga and meditation practices so much more amazing sitting on the ground and receiving so many nutrients and energies from the Earth versus being in doors? It is so good for me; it is good for you too. I remember when I first started meditating and doing yoga outside over four years ago how my family and friends reacted. I remember being asked if I was turning into a tree hugger, or joined a cult religion, even practicing magic. All I knew was I felt so alive, embodied and rejuvenated when being outside with intention. Not only is it one of my pleasures in my life, it is also medically good for me. Keep reading what research is saying…

Nature scientists and researchers are coming to understand how even spending a few minutes in nature can act as a powerful stress reducer in our lives. An immediate limbic calming response happens when we step outdoors and into natural open air spaces. Breathing fresh air, seeing the colors and textures of green plants, natural landscapes and trees, and viewing open skies all tap into the limbic calm response. Studies have even seen significant increases in social behavioral markers when public places simply had views of outdoor, natural areas versus views of concrete high rises.

So how can you take advantage of being outside when your schedule is so busy and you are telling yourself there is too much to do in your day already? Here are a few practices I do throughout my day, especially if I know it will be busy.

  1. After waking up and before heading to the shower, walk outside for a few minutes, take a few deep breaths in and exhale slowly. Stretch your arms and body by reaching as far as you can.
  1. Each time you get in and out of your car, walk a little slower, find a few intentional joys along the way (flowers, a beautiful scent, the way the sun warms your face or the wind blows your hair, natural nature).
  1. If you sit quite a lot at work or any activity, your body will start telling you, you need to get up and move around. My lower back and legs let me know when they are starting to hurt and I need to move around or take a break and walk. Do your walk outdoors and give gratitude for at least one thing.
  1. Meditate or do yoga outside. Find a favorite place within your natural dwelling. I also love to create a sacred space that I can go to in nature for these practices or when I just need to feel supported by the Earths floor. Belly to Earth Mother.

Its time, it’s time to go barefoot and fancy free.

Its time, it’s time for you to try something wild.

Its time, it’s time to fall in love with what you love again.

Its time, it’s time to let your inner child out and play.

Its time, it’s time to listen to what you truly desire and do it.
