What we choose to surround ourselves with in our homes reflects our mindset and emotions. Clearing clutter is a powerful way to open space to bring in more of what you desire and support the flow of abundance in your life.
Take a minute to do this quick exercise. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and visualize the rooms within your home. How do you feel in these spaces? What are some of the words that come up for you? Whether these spaces bring up feeling of expansion, joy and abundance, or restriction and lack, or something in between, there are ways to clear clutter and think about your spaces that can bring more abundance into your life.
First, though, I invite you to define with clarity what abundance means to you. Living with abundance is a flow of giving and receiving. Abundance can be present in your life in many ways, including an abundance of time, creativity, money, relationships, clarity, joy, ideas, or anything else that you can imagine. What is it that you want to shift into the flow of abundance? Holding on to clutter in the spaces of your home, even when it’s hidden in the basement, attic, closets or under the bed, stops the flow of energy and the flow of abundance in your life.
Once you are clear on an intention for what you are inviting more of into your life, there are some simple steps that you can take to set the stage to begin attracting more abundance into your life. Imagine the events of your life unfolding with grace and ease and holding positive expectancy for what is to come. Now, take a look at your home. Does it reflect this expectation? The way you set up and maintain your home is a direct reflection of your mindset and emotions. As you change, if you don’t make changes in your spaces, the energy present can keep you stuck in the past. You can also make shifts by setting up your spaces to reflect your future, ideal self to support you in bringing in more of the energy you desire.
Here are 4 steps you can take to clear clutter and attract more abundance into your life.
1. Always Start with an Intention. Intention setting is a powerful tool. If we look at the aspect of abundance as a cycle of giving and receiving, then when we release clutter, something else will take its place. As energy moves out, energy will move in. We need to be very intentional of what energy we are inviting in. Otherwise, typically what replaces clutter is more clutter. Have you ever cleared clutter in a space only to find that it came back in record time and also multiplied in quantity? Setting an intention will prevent this from happening by replacing the clutter with your desired energy in the space. And as you clear the clutter, repeat the intention in the form of an affirmation. For example, if your intention is to bring more creativity into your life, the affirmation could be, “I am clearing clutter to invite more creativity into my life.”
2. Determine What Your Clutter Is. Once you have an intention, identifying the clutter is the next step in moving forward. Clutter is anything that blocks the energy flow. It typically shows up as things we don’t use, don’t need, are broken, are duplicates, or that bring our energy down. These are things that don’t have a place within the sacred space of our homes, yet at some point, they may have had a purpose. As we change through experiences in our daily lives, the way we relate to our home and the objects within changes. So, what may have been very useful and brought us joy in the past may now be holding us in the past. When identifying clutter, we may ask questions like, “Do I regularly use this item?,” “Does it bring me joy?,” “Does it represent who I am today and who I desire to be in the future?,” “If someone were to visit my home today, what story would this object tell about me, and is that story accurate?”
Sometimes it is quite easy to identify clutter. Other times it may be challenging. For those challenging times, ask yourself what you think you are giving up by releasing that object. If you still cannot make a choice, put the object in a box, seal the box and put an expiration date on it that is no more than 6-9 months away. If you haven’t opened the box or needed the object within that time, give the entire box away.
When examining the reasons why you may have and keep clutter, why things are out of place, or why things are hidden in your home, you can uncover and release the mindset and emotions that reinforce living with lack of clarity, lack of focused intention, and lack in general.
3. Releasing with Ease and Grace. Clutter did not magically invade your home in one night. Release clutter with grace and ease. Release without self-judgement. Pace yourself. Perhaps clutter clear for 10-15 minutes per day until it is done. With everything that you clear, you are shifting the energy within your home. Since you’ve gotten used to the current energy, it may take some time to adjust to the new energy flow. Committing to do too much, too quickly can lead to frustration and abandonment of the task. Moving at a slow, steady pace will bring greater results grounded in clear intentions.
4. Releasing with Gratitude. When releasing objects, it is best to do so with gratitude. For that item had a purpose in your life at some point. Releasing with gratitude supports the energy of abundance and flow in your life. Gratitude amplifies the energy of abundance as we honor what we have been given already and in anticipation of what is to come. Every experience in your life has led you to the point where you are right now. Releasing objects related to these experiences with gratitude reflects appreciation for our current self and how we arrive at this current point in life.
There are many ways that we can attract abundance into our lives. Clearing clutter is an extremely powerful way to do this. Clearing clutter with intention sends out waves of messages to the Universe about what we desire to have in our lives and that we can release the items that we no longer need or use, signaling that we are open with positive expectancy for what is to come next. By setting intentions, determining what is clutter and releasing that clutter with grace, ease and gratitude, we can set the stage for abundance in any area of our life to come in. Along the way, we can also practice self-forgiveness and self-care by releasing judgment about what we’ve kept and why we’ve kept it. Clearing even a few objects from our spaces will shift the energy as we release the old and welcome in the new.
