Clearing clutter has a magical way of creating powerful shifts in our homes and in our lives. It is a simple way to shift energy and create room for new opportunities. While acknowledging that any moment can be a new beginning, a perfect time to clear clutter and make space for the things that you desire most is around the beginning of the new year. Clearing clutter is both an act of self-care and intention-setting, allowing us to release what no longer serves and invite fresh, positive energy into our lives.
When we think of clearing clutter, focus on what you want to create in your life and home. When the Italian Renaissance artist, Michelangelo, created sculptures he referred to it as the object already being within and he was using his tools to free it from the stone. Think of your home environment in that way. Your intentions and all that you desire is present and use the tool of clearing clutter to bring forth all that is already there.
Clearing clutter is all about welcoming into your space only those things that align with your goals and intentions. By following these 3 clutter clearing strategies, we can step into the new year, or any new beginning, welcoming in new energy, clarity and abundance into your life.
Reset Your Spaces by Moving Energy: When was the last time you opened the windows in your home? When energy is trapped and unable to flow, it becomes stagnant. Open the windows, turn on fans, let fresh air circulate throughout your home. As you do so, affirm that you are welcoming new energy and new opportunities into your life. You may also consider clearing the energy with sage, incense, or a clearing spray to remove any lingering stagnant energy.
After allowing the stagnant energy to move out, take a reflective walk through each room of your home. How do you feel in each space? Do you notice any areas that feel heavy, cluttered, or chaotic? Are there any spaces in which you feel constricted or confined? Make note of these spaces as priorities for clutter clearing. This reflective walk can bring awareness to where you feel supported in your home, what areas need attention, and which areas you would like to enhance.
Create Space for Growth by Decluttering Your Mind and Calendar: Clearing physical clutter is only a portion of the process of releasing that which does not support or serve you. Mental and time clutter can be extremely draining. As you step into this new energy, take a good look at your calendar. How many of the commitments on your calendar bring you joy and are in alignment with your intentions and desires? Are there commitments that you have made that were in alignment at one point but no longer support your journey. New beginnings, like the new year, bring the perfect opportunity to reevaluate commitments, obligations, and tasks that may be draining your energy or that may serve as distractions in your pursuit of what really matters to you.
Review your calendar and commitments, asking yourself: Do these activities align with the life I want to create? If not, consider letting go of things that are not serving your growth. Decluttering your schedule can create space for new, fulfilling opportunities, whether that’s more time for self-care, a passion project, or meaningful relationships. When you remove these things from your schedule, affirm that you are clearing out the old to make space for new opportunities in full alignment with your desires.
At the same time, practice decluttering your mind by creating time for relaxation, mindfulness, or journaling. These habits will allow you to clear out mental clutter and focus on setting intentions for what you want to achieve in the new year. How much time do you spend scrolling on your phone, watching repeat shows, or something else that distracts you from your gifts and passions? If these activities do not bring you joy, shift to self-care activities that are truly supportive and fulfilling.
Focus Your Clutter Clearing Activities on High-Impact Spaces: While every area of your home is a reflection of your mindset and emotions, there are some areas that we can focus on for creating immediate shifts in our spaces.
Entryway: Your entryway, also known as the mouth of chi, is the primary point in your home designed to welcome in new, fresh energy. It is essential to keep the architectural entryway to the home clear and inviting. Even though you may enter your home more often through a side door or the garage, this doesn’t lessen the importance of the main entryway into the home. Be sure to remove any items that block the doorway. Ensure that the door is in proper working order, that it opens fully and is not restricted in any way. Take a good look at the area and ask yourself if the area is well-lit, clean, and clear of distractions. Does the area set the tone of readiness for welcoming new opportunities? What is the first thing you feel when you enter your home? This sets the stage for the energy in your entire home.
Decorate your entryway with something that represents the energy you want to invite into your life, whether it’s a piece of artwork that inspires you, a beautiful plant that symbolizes growth, or a mirror to reflect positivity back into your space.
Living Room: The living room is often the center of family gatherings and social interaction. To invite warmth and connection, focus on creating a living room that feels cozy, uncluttered, and welcoming. Remove items that feel outdated or disconnected from the atmosphere you want to create. Consider rearranging furniture to improve the flow of energy through the space, and make sure there is room for everyone to gather comfortably. When doing so, ask yourself what types of relationships you want to foster in your life? Does this space reflect the flow that you desire to experience? Are there items in the space that represent relationships you have released, or want to release? Move those things out and consider adding items that encourage connection, such as soft blankets, comfortable seating, and personal touches like family photos or meaningful decor. When our spaces are open and harmonious, we can feel more grounded and ready to foster new relationships.
Home Office: Our offices are an expression of our passions and gifts that we share with the world. In your office space, clear out any old files, paperwork, or supplies that are no longer needed. Do you have many unfinished projects in the space? Ask yourself if you intend to finish these projects and when? Holding on to unfinished projects that you are not going to complete can reinforce unconscious ideas that you will never finish anything you start. Make a choice about what you intend to finish. Do your choices reflect your intentions and desires? Does the thought of finishing the project bring you joy? To create a space of abundance, the energy needs to flow in a cycle. Abundance is about giving and receiving. If you have a number of unfinished projects sitting around, they create stagnant energy that dampens the flow of abundance.
Clutter clearing is more than just an end-of-year tradition—it is a way to set the tone for the new year and align your environment with the life you desire. By mindfully resetting the energy of your home, decluttering your mind and calendar, and focusing on high-impact spaces, you can create a home that supports your intentions for the coming year. Embrace this opportunity to let go of what no longer serves you, and watch as your desires flow into your life with greater ease.
