Parenting: Raising Children

Parenting with the Angels
By Christina South

Can angels really help us as parents? You bet they can. Here are a few techniques I have learned from the angels to help parents deal with stressful or frustrating situation.

angelBlow away your Anger
This is a technique I have taught my daughter who is two. It works whether she is throwing a fit, or just wants more chocolate milk. Have your child cup their hands together. Have them say “Angels I am really mad at my Mom/Dad/Brother/Sister (you get the point) will you please take my anger away.” I then have them blow the anger out of their hands to be carried away by the angels. My daughter is usual calm and cool by the second “I’m mad at my Mom.”

The Basket
For older children, especially the sports fans in the house try this technique. When ever your child is angry or upset have them play a game with the Angels. We like to play basketball. Have your child take their frustration and pretend to ball up until is the size of a basketball. Tell them to shoot the ball as high into the sky as they can so that the angels can catch it. They can also throw it away into an imaginary trash can. As they throw the ball have them say “Angels catch this anger and take it away so I can have a better day.” Or “Angels help me throw out my anger just like I throw away trash. Help me to have a better day.” Get creative, and create your own game to play with the Angels to help your children deal with frustration.

Digging in the Dirt
Besides being the name of a really good Peter Gabriel song this technique works well for parents too. Have your child draw a picture of their problem. Then go outside and find a place to bury the picture in the ground. As you do this have your child pray that the Angels turn this negative situation around for good. Ask them to help you understand what you can learn from this situation. This is a wonderful technique to use with older children.

I hope these techniques help you as a parent to cope with those less then pleasant moments that occur from time to time. Get creative and ask the angels to assist you with all your parenting needs. They always listen and will provide creative solutions to parenting issues.
